Tonight the re-airing of classic Seattle Sounders matches keeps on rolling. After we all watched the Sounders clinch the 2014 Supporters’ Shield against the LA Galaxy at home, courtesy of two glorious goals from Marco Pappa, tonight we’ll be treated to Clint Dempsey’s home debut after joining the Sounders in August of 2013.
Although the season would ultimately be remembered more for the frustrating way that it ended — a humbling 5-3 aggregate loss in the Western Conference semifinals at the hands of the Portland Timbers after the Sounders stumbled into the playoffs — there were several high points. This game marked the beginning of a five-game winning streak and was in the midst of a stretch of eight wins in nine games that left the Sounders leading the Supporters’ Shield race with 49 points through 25 matches.
Earlier in the year, the Sounders had become the first MLS side to top a Liga MX team in the knock-out rounds of the Concacaf Champions League when they roared back to beat Tigres UANL at CenturyLink Field before narrowly falling to Santos Laguna 2-1 on aggregate in the tournament’s semifinals. They had added Obafemi Martins, Djimi Traore and Deandre Yedlin to an already solid MLS side, and in August they announced that they had made the biggest signing in team history: Clint Dempsey. Following two appearances on the road against Toronto FC and Houston Dynamo, Clint Dempsey was set to make his first appearance as a Sounder in front of the home fans at CenturyLink Field against the team’s biggest rivals in late August. Regardless of what happened after that, that summer night was a seminal moment in the club’s MLS era.
Tonight we savor beginning of the Dempsey Age.
