While MLS is still figuring out how to resume its stalled 2020 regular season, it has made the decision to cancel the All-Star Game, Campeones Cup and League Cup.
The Seattle Sounders had been scheduled to host a still undetermined Liga MX opponent in the third edition of Campeones Cup on Aug. 12. Assuming there is a 2020 season and a new MLS Cup champion is crowned, that team would host the 2021 edition of the match. The game was not scheduled to be part of the Sounders’ season-ticket package and tickets had not yet gone on sale.
This was supposed to be the first year in which teams qualified for Leagues Cup through regular-season play, and new teams will likely be selected in a similar fashion based on 2020 performances.
The MLS All-Star Game was supposed to be at Los Angeles FC’s Banc of California Stadium, and will be rescheduled for 2021. The opponent was going to be a team of Liga MX All-Stars — for the first time ever — and negotiations are apparently ongoing between the two leagues to rehash that arrangement.
