As far as MLS debuts go, it’s hard to imagine a more impressive one than what the Seattle Sounders pulled off in 2009. Not only did they play in front of nearly 30,000 fans, but they put on a sporting display that culminated in a 3-0 domination of a reigning MLS Cup finalist.
The match didn’t only set the tone for a season that would result in the Sounders becoming the first true MLS expansion team to make the playoffs, but also for a model franchise that has now qualified for the playoffs in a record 11 straight seasons, won a Supporters’ Shield, two MLS Cups and four U.S. Open Cups.
Among the highlights are Fredy Montero opening the scoring in the 12th minute, Brad Evans introducing himself to Sounders fans with a goal and Osvaldo Alonso bossing the midfield.
Tonight, you’ll get a chance to watch it in all its glory on JOEtv at 7 p.m. If you’ve never had a chance to watch this game, it’s virtual must-watch stuff.
