OL Groupe president Jean-Michel Aulas has announced his intention to stage a women’s soccer tournament in Lyon this August, with a desire to invite PSG, Juventus and OL Reign to participate, along with hosts Olympique Lyonnais. The tournament would take place at Groupama Stadium, which was the site of the 2019 Women’s World Cup semifinals and final.
Aulas envisions having two tournaments – one in July for men’s teams, and one in August for women’s teams — with up to eight teams participating in each. Division 1 Feminine in France and the women’s Serie A in Italy have both cancelled the remainder of their seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving teams to develop their own plans before a tentative resumption of play in the autumn.
The NWSL has similarly announced that clubs will be able to continue training through November and have the option of playing friendlies following the conclusion of the NWSL Challenge Cup in late July. We reached out to OL Reign to ask about this report, but they declined to comment on their plans after the Challenge Cup.
