OL Reign v Utah Royals FC

OL Reign (1-1-1) take on the Portland Thorns (0-1-2) to round out the group stage of play in the NWSL Challenge Cup. The Cascadia derby kicks off Monday, July 13, at 9:30 AM PT. The game will stream on CBS All Access for U.S. and Canadian viewers and will be available on Twitch for international fans.

While all eight teams advance to the knockout rounds, this game has plenty of implications when it comes to seeding heading into the quarterfinals. Reign can theoretically still finish anywhere from 2nd to 8th, and an 8th-place finish would have them facing off against the North Carolina Courage — that wouldn’t be my first choice. A win or draw avoids that fate.

In some promising news for the team, Jess Fishlock and Sofia Huerta have moved from “Out” to “Questionable” on the Injury Report. Reign head coach Farid Benstiti indicated in a press conference on Sunday that Huerta is more likely to earn minutes between the two of them — and could even get a start — as she’s not coming back from as significant of an injury as Fishlock.

At the same time, Benstiti was quite clear about his goal for the club: to be “fresh and strong” heading into the quarterfinal. That points to some additional rotation against the Thorns, who may also be without their starting centerback duo of Becky Sauerbrunn and Emily Menges.

Anything goes in a rivalry match. Today’s is sure to be physical and heated. Sounds like the perfect way to start your week.

Keys to the Match

  • Take care of crosses into the box — there will be plenty of them
  • Keep possession, but progress the ball in the attack
  • Play with Pride
