Sounders vs. Whitecaps: Highlights, stats and quotes

New, 1 comment

Sounders come roaring back to life.

The path to advancement wasn’t necessarily smooth, but the Seattle Sounder were able to secure their place in the MLS is Back Knockout Round with a 3-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday. This was easily the Sounders’ best performance of the tournament, albeit against a depleted Whitecaps opponent. Nonetheless, the Sounders dominated the stat sheet despite missing several potential starters and will now wait to see how the rest of the groups play out.

POST-MATCH QUOTES & SOUNDBYTES: SOUNDERS FC 3 – WHTECAPS FC 0

SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC HEAD COACH BRIAN SCHMETZER – LINK TO SOUNBYTES

On the game plan and Jordan Morris’ performance:

“The game plan coming in was to just find a better balance, and I think the team understands who they are. Jordan is a great athlete – tremendous, strong, powerful – [he received] a couple of early balls, Kelvin [Leerdam] hit him with a good ball, some other ones, and then he gets rewarded finally with the goal. We found the right balance, I thought. Late in the game maybe we could have kept possession a little bit more, but at that time the game was kind of cooked. Overall I thought it was a very, very, very good performance by Jordan. He highlighted his skills tremendously tonight.”

On how the team is feeling three games into the tournament:

“As a team, we were frustrated that we weren’t a lot of many chances in the first games. Obviously we’re a good defensive team, but we have a lot of dangerous guys going forward, so we were all frustrated with that. I think finding that balance was something that was good. The first half of this game we came out flying – making runs in behind, creating chances – and that was great to see and obviously led to some goals.”

SOUNDERS FC MIDFIELDER NICO LODEIRO – LINK TO SOUNBYTES

On the team playing more confidently:

”The sensation after the game was very good. We feel very happy because we needed this game. We needed the three points, we needed the confidence, we needed to score, we needed assists. And more importantly in the end is the confidence for our team. So now we know we need to go look forward, train more because bigger games are coming and we need to be prepared.”
