Sounders vs. LAFC: Highlights, stats and quotes

New, 3 comments

The Sounders were out shot 25-11.

Facing their stiffest test of the MLS is Back Tournament, the Seattle Sounders flopped. From the opening whistle, the Sounders struggled to handle the Los Angeles FC high press. When they broke, they got into dangerous positions only to waste the opportunities.

On the other end, LAFC created plenty of good chances of their own and benefitted greatly from some sloppy Sounders play.

Although the Sounders came close to tying the score relatively late, the 4-1 scoreline was more than fair.

POST-MATCH QUOTES & SOUNDBYTES: SOUNDERS FC 1 – LOS ANGELES FC 4

SOUNDERS FC HEAD COACH BRIAN SCHMETZER – LINK TO SOUNBYTES

On why the team started so slowly:

“I wish I had an answer for that…Maybe we got them too wound up. I’ll reflect on the messaging that we had prior to the game. It certainly wasn’t our intent to allow LAFC to walk the ball up into our half of the field and put us under pressure defensively.”

SOUNDERS FC GOALKEEPER STEFAN FREI – LINK TO SOUNBYTES

On LAFC’s style:

“They play a quick game – high press, very frantic, try to create chances, quickly counter. There’s opportunities for us to exploit that over-aggressiveness at times, but we also needed to find a bit more of a balance.”

SOUNDERS FC FORWARD WILL BRUIN – LINK TO SOUNBYTES

On scoring in his first game back from injury:

”Honestly it was a long time coming for me to get back on the field. It was a little over 13 months. It’s a long time. My first objective was to complete my first pass…then to get in the box on the end of some crosses. [Joevin Jones] put a great ball in and I re-directed it in…I’m happy to get back out on the field playing the game I love.”
