Carlos Vela will almost certainly miss Sunday’s game against the Seattle Sounders after it was revealed that he suffered a MCL injury over the weekend.
Carlos Vela has a grade MCL injury...He will likely miss a month to six weeks— Kevin Baxter (@kbaxter11) August 25, 2020
The reigning MLS MVP has had an uneven start to 2020. He opened the season by scoring in Los Angeles FC’s first two games — a win and a tie — before the coronavirus pandemic forced the season to be suspended. He then chose to sit out the MLS is Back Tournament to remain home with his pregnant wife as LAFC was bounced in the quarterfinals. Vela returned to action with LAFC in Saturday’s renewal of El Trafico, but was forced out about 57 minutes into the game after suffering an injury on a blocked shot attempt. LAFC ended up falling 2-0 to the Galaxy.
It might not be all bad news for LAFC, though. The reigning Supporters’ Shield winners have gone 2-0-3 in the five matches they played without Vela, including a 4-1 win over the Sounders in the MLS is Back Round of 16. LAFC are 1-1-1 in the three matches Vela has started this year.
Assuming Vela is out, LAFC will likely use a lineup that looks very similar to the one the Sounders faced about a month ago. In that game, Bradley Wright-Phillips started in Vela’s place. Wright-Phillips has three goals in a little less than 250 minutes this season.
