Jordan Morris wins Player of the Week, two teammates make Team of the Week

All it took was one of the most dominating performances in MLS history for three Seattle Sounders to be named to Team of the Week. Leading the way was Jordan Morris, who was also named MLS Player of the Week for his one-goal, three-assist performance in the Sounders’ 7-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Joevin Jones (two goals, two assists) and Raúl Ruidíaz (two goals, two assists) were also named to Team of the Week.

The bevy of options may have led to the Player of the Week voting being a bit closer than it probably deserved to be. Although Morris got about 45% of the fan vote, he actually finished second to Dax McCarthy in the media vote. Most likely that was a product of the Sounders’ share of votes being spread out among three players, as Jones and Ruidíaz also received support from the media contingent.

It’s hard to fault anyone — given a choice — for selecting any one of the three Sounders’ options. Morris tied a franchise record with three assists, while adding a particularly impressive individual effort on the first goal of the match. His two primary assists also set up Ruidíaz and Jones. Morris now has 12 goals and 11 assists in his past 24 regular-season games.

Jones had his first multi-goal performance of his MLS career and tied a career high with two assists.

Ruidíaz only needed 57 minutes to score his second brace of the season and now has seven goals in 2020. Five of those goals have come in the five games since the Sounders returned from the MLS is Back Tournament.
