Full-Time: Well, that was not an ideal ending for the Seattle Sounders given that their game plan worked for most of the game. But, Real Salt scored an absolute rocket in the 85th minute to seal the game 2-2. Old school soccer folks will tell you games always come down to set pieces, and both of RSL’s goals came directly from a set piece.

Seattle actually had the lead twice tonight by first going up 1-0 in the first half via a Nicolas Lodeiro penalty kick. The Sounders controlled most of the first half after they scored through a tough defensive block and outlet passes to stretch RSL behind.

Early in the second half RSL tied the match for the first time through a Justen Glad header off a set piece. The Sounders were able to regain the lead in the 69’ minute from a Yeimar Gómez Andrade header. The rest of the second half was pretty comfortable for the Sounders until Pablo Ruiz scored a thunderbolt from 30 yards out. Thems the breaks sometime.

A result in this match is still good. Portland on Sunday. See you there.

85’ MINUTE: Wow. Just... Wow.

69’ MINUTE: Yeimar Gómez Andrade Andrade heads home a beautiful cross from Alex Roldan.

50’ MINUTE: Ugh. RSL equalizes through a headed corner kick early in the second half. We’re tied at 1-1.

HALFTIME: Not the most entertaining halves of soccer but man was it effective. Given the fixture congestion and the need to rotate, it’s fantastic to be up heading into the half. The Sounders have the fire power on the bench should they need to use it, but so far their defense has kept RSL from having much of a threat.

29’ MINUTE: Herrera from RSL makes a huge mistake and Nico scores the PK.

KICKOFF: Go Sounders.

LINEUPS: Brian Schmetzer is throwing a bit of a curveball, opting to deploy his team in what we’re calling a 5-4-1 formation. Among the changes are Alex Roldan at right back, Nouhou at left back, Xavier Arreaga at centerback, Handwalla Bwana as a left mid and Jordy Delem as a central midfielder. Nicolas Lodeiro also drops back as a defensive midfielder, although he’ll surely join the attack plenty.

The Seattle Sounders head to Sandy, Utah tonight to take on Real Salt Lake for the first time this season. The actual soccer game might not be the most important thing happening right now for RSL fans, given the news about their owner and front office, but the team is in good form offensively. The Claret and Cobalt have scored 4 goals in each of their last two matches. It’ll be a big test for a Sounders team that’s expected to rotate a few starters. Notably, the Sounders have only won a regular-season game in Utah once, way back in 2011.
