Former Seattle Sounders player Henry Wingo is two games away from becoming the first Washingtonian to qualify for UEFA Champions League. Wingo is expected to start today at right back for reigning Norwegian champion Molde FK, who will host Hungary’s Ferencvarosi TK in the first of two qualifying legs. The winner will earn a berth into the Champions League group stage where they’d like match up against with some of the world’s biggest teams.
Molde has had to navigate three qualifying round in order to get to this point. Along the way, they’ve beaten Finland’s KuPS (5-0), Slovenia’s NK Celje (1-2) and Azerbaijan’s Qarabag (0-0, 5-6 penalties).
Ferencvarosi are no pushover, though. To get to this point they’ve had to beat Sweden’s Djurgardens (2-0), Scotland’s Celtic (1-2) and Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb (2-1).
