The 2021 SheBelieves Cup continues today with the second day of matches. Sunday’s first game features a top-of-the-table clash between Brazil and the United States, both of whom won their opening match on Thursday. Kickoff in that game is at noon PT on FS1, followed by Canada against Argentina at 3 PM PT on FS2.

What to Watch

USA v. Brazil

The Americans squeaked by Canada in their opening game, winning 1-0 thanks to a Rose Lavelle goal in the 79th minute. Vlatko Andonovski’s side dominated most aspects of the game, finishing with 28 shots and 57% of possession, but strong defensive cohesion and some individual heroics by Canada kept the game close. The US will want to score early in this game to settle their nerves and force Brazil to open up.

Brazil cruised in their opening match, easily handling Argentina, 4-1, with four different goal scorers. The Seleção have lost only once in 14 matches under new head coach Pia Sundhage, who has the team playing with confidence and flair. Marta and Debinha controlled the midfield on Thursday and will demand a lot of attention from the US defense and in ways they were not challenged against Canada. Look for Brazil to work quick passes to break the US high press and feed balls up their speedy and talented attackers in the space behind.

Argentina v. Canada

Argentina faced extra challenges coming into their opening match, in the form of four players unable to participate due to Covid-19 protocols. One bright spot for them last game was recent Kansas City NWSL signing Mariana Larroquette, who placed a perfect header to the far post for Argentina’s lone goal.

Canada has likewise faced roster challenges, with several of their key players either out due to injury or not released by their club teams due to quarantine rules. On top of that, they lost starting goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to a non-contact leg injury early in their game against the United States, forcing Stephanie Labbé into the game unexpectedly. Labbé shined against the Americans with a number of highlight reel saves, and will likely be pressed into duty again today. New Canada head coach Bev Priestman will be anxious to notch her first win, and if her side plays with the same intensity the showed against the USWNT the opportunity should be there for the taking.
