After taking the 2020 NWSL season off due to COVID-19 concerns, Megan Rapinoe looks fresh and ready to go in 2021. Following two friendlies against Colombia in January, the OL Reign forward made her first tournament appearance of the year with the U.S. Women’s National Team, featuring in all three matches during the SheBelieves Cup.

Rapinoe scored three goals — two against Argentina and one in a sub appearance against Brazil, which resulted in a sweet celebration dedicated to Sloane, the newly adopted daughter of Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger.

Rapinoe’s two goals against Argentina were well taken and she was full of energy in her 60-minute appearance — pinching in to play as a withdrawn forward at times and showing a commitment to pressing throughout the match. Rapinoe also led the USWNT in chances created, with three, and became the all-time leading goalscorer (7 goals) for the SheBelieves Cup, which began in 2016.

What might be even more exciting for OL Reign fans, however, were Rapinoe’s comments to FS1 after the match, where she expressed excitement for the upcoming NWSL season.

“I’m really excited to get back in the NWSL. Obviously, I took all the time that I could possibly take last year, but I think it really did do me well,” Rapinoe shared with a big smile, reflecting on the long period she gave herself to let her body recover. “I think the NWSL and all the teams and players have done an incredible job with all the protocols and keeping everybody safe, so I’m looking forward to getting back with the team.”

Rapinoe still has big goals ahead of the Olympics as she fights for one of 18 coveted spots on the USWNT roster. “As far as we know, the Olympics is happening, so pre-season will be good for us, a couple games coming up in April and then really looking to start the season so we can get that consistent play. That’s the next thing that I am really looking forward to is those consistent games and consistent training environment for us all to play in.”

Rapinoe seems to leave no doubts with these comments. She’s excited to join OL Reign, and if this week is any indication, she looks ready to contribute.
