MLS Cup odds: Sounders are second favorites

Probably not a good time to put money on the Sounders.

DK Nation recently published their opening odds for 2021 MLS Cup and, as expected, LAFC and the Columbus Crew are among the favorites. Somewhat more surprising is that the Seattle Sounders are tied with the Crew for the second-best odds. The Sounders are currently listed at +450, which means a $100 bet pay out a net of $450.

In addition to being the defending MLS Cup winners, the Crew have almost undeniably had the best offseason of anyone in the league. Among their signings are free agents Kevin Molino and Bradley Wright Phillips in addition to likely U-22 initiative signing Alexandru Matan. Considering how dominant they were in MLS Cup, it seems logical that they’d be among the favorites to repeat.

The Sounders are obviously the team they beat in that final, and to be honest it’s a little bit of a head-scratcher how they can be considered to be on equal footing with the Crew in terms of odds after losing four potential starters. That said, it could be an acknowledgement that however the Sounders look today, they’ve built up enough faith that oddsmakers simply believe that they’ll be right in the mix by the time we get to the playoffs.

My suspicion, though, is that the odds are simply a reflection of where the betting markets believe the money will go.
