Sounders will play in 2021 Leagues Cup competition

The Seattle Sounders will host at least one match a Liga MX opponent, being one of four MLS teams to compete in the tournament.

The Seattle Sounders are back in international competition, as the team was officially included in the 2021 Leagues Cup schedule.

The Leagues Cup is a competition between MLS and Liga MX clubs. Four teams from each league compete in the tournament, which held its first-ever competition in July 2019. Last year’s competition was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, the Sounders are joined by Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City SC and New York City FC to face off with four still-to-be-announced Liga MX opponents. However, due to its victory in the 2020 Guardianes season, Club Léon looks to have secured a berth. Unlike the initial version of the tournament which was invite-only, this year’s slate of teams was determined by regular-season finish with the two teams from each conference who didn’t qualify for Champions League representing MLS. They are 3-3-1 against Liga MX opponents at home.

Liga MX teams will be finalized at the end of the current Clausura season.

The entire tournament will be played in the United States, going from August until September. The Sounders will host at least one match of the Leagues Cup and the final being at a neutral site. Beginning dates for the contest include:

  • Quarterfinals: Week of August 9
  • Semifinals: Week of September 13
  • Final: Week of September 20

The final will be held at a neutral location, according to CONCACAF.

This will be the Sounders’ first appearance in the Leagues Cup. Seattle has posted a 4-8-2 record against Liga MX opponents, all of which came in Champions League play. Among their notable wins were becoming just the second MLS team to win on Mexican soil when they beat Monterrey 1-0 in 2011 and becoming the first MLS team to eliminate a Liga MX opponent when they beat Tigres UANL in 2013.

Seattle will kick off MLS competition on April 16 against Minnesota United at Lumen Field.
