Nicolás Lodeiro will likely be allowed to remain with the Seattle Sounders throughout preseason and might well be out of Uruguay’s national team picture going forward.
The midfielder was not named to Oscar Tabarez’s 35-man roster for a pair of upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia.

While Lodeiro’s place in Uruguay’s team has always been a bit precarious, it’s now been almost two years since the 31-year-old last played for La Celeste at the 2019 Copa America. Lodeiro has not been called into any of Uruguay’s six 2022 World Cup qualifying matches to date, nor any of the six friendlies they played after the Copa America in 2019.
There will, however, be plenty of opportunities for that to change. Uruguay has two more World Cup qualifiers in June and then go straight into Copa America the same month before World Cup qualifying picks up again in September, October and November.
