Sounders dominating MLS weekly recognition

Raúl Ruidíaz, João Paulo, and Josh Atencio all earn respect from national pundits.

Raúl Ruidíaz holds up two fingers, one for each member of the MLS full team of week to open the season.

After their dominating win over Minnesota United FC, the Seattle Sounders are collecting weekly recognition. After his brace, Raúl Ruidíaz headlined the Team of the Week. He was also a finalist for Player of the Week. That award went to Chicharito, the other two-goal scorer on opening weekend.

In that voting Ruidíaz came in 25.5%, with Chicharito getting 42%.

Not to be ignored are teammates Josh Atencio and João Paulo. In Atencio’s first MLS start, he put up the second most defensive actions on the squad, completed 77% of his passes, and won 78% of his 15 duels. The 19-year-old likely edged out the other two starting midfielders on the team — who were both short-listed as top performers in Sounder at Heart polling.

Shamefully, Josh didn’t get a secondary assist on this brilliant switch.

Opening weekend was full of absolute bangers, and JP’s MLS after dark worldie, was Sportcenter Top Play. That goal is up for Goal of the Week. Go stuff that ballot.
