Henry Wingo wins another European league title

Former Sounder has now won league titles in Hungary and Norway.

Henry Wingo just keeps winning league titles. The Seattle native and former Sounders player just added his third title in as many years as Ferencvaros TC clinched the Hungarian league title with a 3-0 win over Ujpest on Tuesday.

Wingo had previously won a title with Norway with Molde and played for the Sounders during their 2019 MLS Cup-winning season (although he had transferred partway through it).

Wingo did not play in the title-clinching match, but he has made nine appearances and three starts since transferring to Ferencvaros in January.

By winning the Hungarian top flight, Ferencvaros are now among 13 teams to have already claimed a spot in the first qualifying round of the 2021-22 Champions League. That’s the same place Ferencvaros started before ultimately beating Wingo’s Molde to qualify for the Champions League group stage, where they claimed just one point against Barcelona, Juventus and Dynamo Kyiv.

If Ferencvaros were to make it that far again, Wingo would be the first Washingtonian to compete in the Champions League group stage. He and Kasey Keller are the only Washingtonians to have played in any UEFA men’s competition.
