Lodeiro has only played about 30 minutes this season, first dealing with a quad injury and more recently with an inflamed knee. Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer insisted the injury is getting better but also called him day-to-day.
“We’re trying to calm that down as much as we can,” Schmetzer said. “Not sure if he’ll be ready for this week.”
Atencio hasn’t played since going 90 minutes in the season’s first two games after suffering a quad injury prior to the LA Galaxy match and was ruled out for this one.
“He’s not going to make it for this game,” Schmetzer said. “He’s still struggling with the quad. We’ll hold him out for safety’s sake.”
Schmetzer was not asked for an update on Jimmy Medranda, specifically, so his status is also unclear. Medranda was on the bench against the Timbers but was left off the gameday roster for the Earthquakes game.
Even with the recent signing of 16-year-old midfielder Reed Baker-Whiting, that will likely leave the Sounders with no more than 18 players available against LAFC, two fewer than MLS allows. In fact, the Sounders have only fielded a full bench in one of five matches, and that was only by suiting all three first-team goalkeepers for the LA Galaxy game. That hasn’t hurt their performance, though, as they’ve tied a franchise record by going 4-0-1 to start the season.
