It turns out that racking up six points in two matches, to extend your unbeaten streak to start the season the six games will turn some heads.
The Seattle Sounders continued their scorching-hot start to the season with two shutout victories over the San Jose Earthquakes and LAFC, and as a result were acknowledged by MLSsoccer.com with four entries on ‘Team of the Week.’
Head Coach Brian Schmetzer was awarded ‘Coach of the Week’ leading his team to the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings first with a 1-0 win over San Jose, which included a formation change, some significant squad rotation and a field player making an appearance in goal. And while the Sounders got off to a shaky start against LAFC’s high-press, Schmetzer’s halftime adjustments paid off with two goals in the second half to defeat Bob Bradley’s side 2-0.
He was joined by Alex Roldan, Cristian Roldan and Xavier Arreaga. Alex Roldan tallied a beautiful assist against LAFC, using some individual skill to skate past three LAFC defenders before sending in a pinpoint cross that was nodded home by Brad Smith. Of course, most fans are still talking about his star-turn in goal, taking over for an injured Stefan Frei in stoppage time, where he made three saves to preserve the win.
His brother Cristian was no less important, scoring the winning goal against San Jose on a fantastic volley, and captaining the Sounders to victory against LAFC. Xavier Arreaga gave the Sounders their winning margin in that match, knocking home a header on a corner kick from Joao Paulo, and put in a solid defensive shift against LAFC’s attack.
