This guy is calling MLS matches again, which is cool.
Mike Russell/Sounder at heart

Hello Puget Sound-based American soccer fans. There’s some great football action this weekend to help remind you that American soccer is good, actually. All of our local teams are in action, so check those gamethreads for OL Reign, Seattle Sounders, and Tacoma Defiance.

This thread is the one where we reminisce about the heat dome (and feel sad for our Drysider friends who are still under it) and plead with you to watch soccer, not fireworks.

NWSL games to watch

Orlando Pride v. North Carolina Courage - Sunday at 3 PM PT on Paramount+

1 v 2? Yes. Something to do that doesn’t involve starting a wildfire on July 4? Also yes. Are Orlando faking their way to the top of the table? Also, also yes. Both rosters will be slightly diminished and for the next few weeks that’s going to be true.

Columbus Crew v. New England Revolution - Saturday at 2 PM PT on ESPN/ESPN Deportes

This is the only MLS match on national TV this weekend, which is kind of bizarre, since it’s a three-day weekend and MLS is still playing. Crew are opening their new stadium, the one with jackhammers and busting up concrete. That’s not the most bizarre thing. Columbus will be using their third logo just this year. Yes, I know you hate Caleb Porter still, but you actually want Crew 96 to take at least one point and maybe three, because the Revs are in the Shield hunt, and in this house we want New England to be locked into a single major domestic trophy forever (also, we want the Shield).

Chicago Fire v. Atlanta United - Saturday at 5 PM PT on ESPN+

With the Fire back at Soldier Field and an amped crowd, this is a great match for Arlo White to call (I cry). Atlanta is winless on the road. Chicago has only a single win on the year (not counting their new logo, which is awesome, so they aren’t wearing it). Arlo... man. Great get, Fire. (I cry). It is White’s last match of his 2021 Fire duties.

LA Galaxy v. Sporting KC - Sunday at 7:30 PM PT on ESPN+

What a great way to avoid fireworks! Peter Vermes teams know how to dampen everything — joy, the hope for good soccer. LA and Sporks are both trying to catch the Sounders in the West. That’s like a flashback to 2013 or something. Give us a nil-nil draw or something stupid like each side getting a hattrick.

San Diego Loyal vs Sacramento Republic - Saturday at 7:30 PM PT on ESPN2

This is a big match to see who can claim third in the Pacific Division. Loyal suddenly look good, even if advanced metrics hate them, and Republic are in freefall. Defiance fans should root for a draw.

  • Elsewhere in the Pacific, Rising host Los Dos on Saturday night.
  • Sirius XM FC is carrying OKC Energy FC v FC Tulsa on Friday at 5:30 PM PT.
  • Nicholas Murray has two others for you to watch.

There’s also international soccer this weekend.

Euro 2020 is on ABC, ESPN, Univision, TUDN and their related apps.

Copa America is on FS1 and TUDN.

The Gold Cup is on FS2 and Prende (the Univision app).

This is your AmSocc open thread for the weekend of Friday, July 2 through Sunday, July 4. Watch with us because what else are you going to do this weekend?
