Add one more name to the list of injured Seattle Sounders. Despite playing all 90 minutes, Josh Atencio apparently suffered a broken rib in the 1-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday. It was not immediately clear how much time Atencio could miss.
“I could tell the kid wants to play, he doesn’t want to have a little bit of pain slow him down,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said. “That’s indicative of the entire group.”
Brian Schmetzer said the injury happened in the second half and that Atencio played about 30 minutes with the pain. Neither Atencio nor the coaching staff were aware of the severity until the game was over.
“He wasn’t able to run off the field to get an X-Ray,” Schmetzer said. “He’s a tough kid, he tried to play through it. Had I known he had a broken rib, of course I would have pulled him off for his safety.”
In all likelihood, Atencio will likely at least be held out for Wednesday’s home game against FC Dallas and the Leagues Cup match on Aug. 10.
