RSL 1, SOUNDERS 0: Demir Kreilach scored in the 49th minute off an Aaron Herrera cross to give RSL the initial lead. It was the first run-of-play goal the Sounders have allowed with either Stefan Frei or Nouhou on the field.

LODEIRO INJURY UPDATE: While the rotated lineup is not a big surprise, there was notable name left off the team sheet: Nicolás Lodeiro. After being held out of the Leagues Cup match as a “precautionary” measure, head coach Brian Schmetzer is now saying that the midfielder “re-aggravated” the injury that kept him out for much of the season but that it’s expected to be a “short-term absence.” It was not immediately clear if Lodeiro would be available for Wednesday’s Leagues Cup final.
It was way back in 2011 when the Seattle Sounders last won a regular-season game at Rio Tinto Stadium. Now that doesn’t include a 2012 playoff win, nor the time in 2016 when the Sounders ousted RSL on penalties in the U.S. Open Cup, but it does fairly illustrate how tough it has been for the Sounders to get a result in Utah. During the 10 regular-season meetings since that wIn, the Sounders have only even managed a tie twice.
There’s some reason to think the Sounders could turn the tides, despite likely heavily rotating their lineup. For one, RSL is coming off a midweek game themselves and are actually on a day less rest. Their defense has also been highly suspect and Pablo Mastroeni has insisted on pushing more numbers into the attack. The Sounders are also very good on the road and on short rests this year. Finally, the Sounders have Freddy Juarez, who was the head coach of RSL as recently as a few weeks ago. One imagines he’ll be able to offer some quality intel.
- After registering 4 goals and 2 assists in his first five games of the season, Rubio Rubin had just 1 goal and 2 assists in his next 18. That changed on Wednesday when he scored a brace to help lead RSL to a 4-3 comeback over the Earthquakes.
- RSL have scored the third most goals in MLS (40) but have also allowed more (36) than all but eight teams.
- The Sounders are riding a four-game road winning streak. With one more win, the Sounders would tie their longest road winning streak in franchise history (2011).
