Sounders vs. Earthquakes: Gamethread
The Seattle Sounders will look to shake off a couple of frustrating defensive performances when they host the San Jose Earthquakes. The Sounders are 2-0-2 since returning from the Club World Cup, but are coming off a pair of frustrating matches in which they took 3-0 leads but were forced to settle for a one-goal win and a 3-3 tie.
In Bruce Arena’s first season as Quakes head coach, he’s rebuilt them into a scoring machine. They are second in all of MLS with 44 goals scored, led by Cristian Arrango’s 10 goals. But they’re also one of the leakiest defenses, having allowed 39 goals.
The Sounders will likely rotate their lineup at least somewhat after only making two changes from the weekend during their midweek match.
Notes
- This will be the decisive match in the Heritage Cup, a fan-awarded trophy. The Earthquakes currently hold the title and would retain it with a 2-2 tie or better. The Sounders haven’t won it since 2021 and can win it with ties of 0-0, 1-1 or an outright win.
- Jackson Ragen will be serving a suspension due to yellow-card accumulation. Nouhou will be suspended as well, after getting a two-game ban from MLS for throwing a ball at a fan.
- This will be the second of two games during the Sounders’ “Throwback Week” that was highlighted by the release of the 1995-inspired “Orca Kit.”
