Reigns Abroad: Fishlock and Little to join stocked Melbourne City

Two of Seattle's best join the exodus of NWSL players flying south for the winter.

This week the Reign announced that the team's two Great British superstars Kim Little and Jess Fishlock will be playing this winter for Melbourne City FC in Australia's W-League. They join a large crowd of other NWSL players — including Reign teammates Keelin Winters and Kendall Fletcher — making the move to the W-League, which has a conveniently complementary schedule for players otherwise facing a six month break from competitive play (and playing income).

Fishlock will join the expansion team as both a player and the assistant coach. Little will be playing with another club for the first time since joining the Reign and becoming the team's perennial MVP.

Melbourne City FC is affiliated with the men's A-League team of the same name and will be playing their first season in the W-League. Both are part of the vast network of teams owned by City Football Group, which also includes Manchester City and New York City FC. Melbourne City kicks off their first match this Sunday against Sydney FC. With the Reign's two elite players as well as Australian star forward Lisa De Vanna on the squad, the team is already drawing predictions as a potential title contender.
