Reign Preseason Begins With 30 Player Preliminary Roster

The third NWSL season and the Reign's defense of their Shield is approaching quickly. Today was the opening day of preseason, and the Reign brought a 30-player roster to a sunny first day of training at Memorial Stadium. And that doesn't include the five players who are off on international duty or Jess Fishlock, who's on loan in Germany until April 2nd.

Notable absences from last season are Naho Kawasumi, who's staying in Japan in the lead-up to the 2015 World Cup, and local favorite Kate Deines, who was traded to Kansas City for Merritt Mathias in the offseason.

Mathias joins defender Michelle Cruz, who was signed in the offseason, the Reign's two draft picks, and a bevy of trialists hoping to make one of just a handful of open roster spots.
