The Seattle Reign return to Memorial Stadium tonight after two consecutive road losses. They host the Washington Spirit, who are currently second in the league — thanks in large part to some thunderbolt goals from ex-Reign player Christine Nairn.
The Reign will be without national team players Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, who are turning their focus to the 2015 World Cup. And in turn the Spirit will be without their own keeper Ashlyn Harris as well as fullback Ali Krieger for the same reason. Last time the Spirit played in Memorial it was the 2014 NWSL semifinals, which Seattle won thanks in large part to a Solo penalty save.
Seattle will be hoping to recover from consecutive 1-goal losses on counterattacking goals from speedy forwards — first from Chicago's Christen Press and then from Kansas City's Amy Rodriguez. That run of road games against the Red Stars and Blues could be the toughest stretch of the entire season and the Reign will be trying to use home field advantage to re-establish the momentum from 2014 that carried them to an NWSL Shield and an appearance in the final.
Other than the missing national team players and rookie Havana Solaun, who's out for the season, the full roster is available to Laura Harvey.
