Today the Reign travel to verdant New Jersey in search of their first road points of the season. Their opponent is Sky Blue FC, who in the young season are hovering near the bottom of the standings with only one win in four, no wins at home, and only three goals scored in four games this season.
Both teams will be without key national team players. Seattle is missing Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe to US duty and Sky Blue is missing defenders Kelly O'Hara and Christie Rampone. With those key defensive absences, their chances of a shutout against the Reign offense seem slim, so they'll need to find a way to score. To do that they'll have to find a way to unlock Nadia Nadim, who led the team in scoring last season but has been quiet since an opening day goal against Kansas City.
Seattle recovered from a two game road losing streak last weekend when they beat the Washington Spirit at home 3-1. Though they got the win, they have yet to get a shutout this season after starting 2014 with three shutouts in their first four matches.
The injury report is clean (other than Solaun's long-term absence) which means Jess Fishlock could be available despite taking what looked like an ankle injury in the last match and ending the game on crutches. At the very least, she traveled with the team.
After this match the team has a three week break before their next league match at the end of May, preceded by a friendly against the Chinese National Team. So a bad result here would have a long time to weigh on the team.
