After an early exit in the 2016 Olympics, the U.S. Women’s National Team is looking to rebuild — and a number of fresh faces should make their debut tonight when the U.S. face Switzerland in an international friendly. The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
USWNT Coach Jill Ellis has brought in a 24-player roster to training camp that features 11 uncapped players — including Seattle Reign FC’s Merritt Mathias — and Ellis will choose 18 players to dress for the match.
According to ESPN writer Graham Hays, Chicago Red Stars left back Casey Short has impressed Ellis, and she had “high praise for Stanford junior Andi Sullivan.” Sullivan has the potential to grow into a role as a creator in the midfield, something that was lacking this summer for the squad.
Get to Know Switzerland
A national team on the rise, Switzerland is currently ranked 15th in the world. The team made its first Women’s World Cup appearance in 2015 and made it out of the group stage before falling 1-0 to Canada in a close, well-fought battle. Switzerland qualified for the 2017 UEFA Women’s EURO after winning all 8 qualifying matches by a combined 34-3 margin.
Switzerland will be without its most dynamic attacker, 25-year-old Ramona Bachmann, who is not on the roster for the U.S. matches. However, the team will have Lara Dickenmann, who has 44 goals in 114 international caps. Dickenmann currently plays at VfL Wolfsburg after after seven season stint with the dominant French club Olympique Lyon.
USA and Switzerland have met just twice prior to tonight’s match, most recently at the 2015 Algarve Cup in Portugal. The U.S. won 3-0 on goals from Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and Amy Rodriguez.
