Reign Season Opener Revealed - April 17 vs Sky Blue

New, comments

Seattle will kick off their defense of the NWSL Shield on April 17th at home.

Though the full 2016 season schedule has yet to be released, today we at least learned the date and opponent of the Reign's first match, which will be at home on April 17 at 4pm versus Sky Blue FC.

This will be the third consecutive season that Seattle will kick off their season at home, where they've never lost a match since moving to Memorial Stadium before the 2014 season. That season they opened with a 3-0 win over Boston, and last season they opened with a 5-1 home win over Western New York.

Sky Blue has had an eventful offseason that's included the additions of new head coach Christy Holly, Hermann trophy winner Raquel Rodriguez, and one-time US national teamer Tasha Kai (who has been away from the pro game and playing rugby for years). This year they'll be trying to recover from the slide that saw them drop from a playoff team in 2013 to 6th and 8th place over the last two seasons.

The opener comes eight days after the team's final preseason match, against the University of Washington. It is also a week after Euro qualifiers for Scotland and Sweden and just a few days after a match for Wales, which could limit the availability of Seattle's Jess Fishlock, Kim Little, Rachel Corsie, and new international addition Antonia Göransson.
