Megan Rapinoe’s celebration was a moment to remember during USA’s 13-0 romp

The goal itself was largely inconsequential but the celebration will likely live on.

The United States scored the biggest blowout in Women’s World Cup history on Tuesday, opening group play with a 13-0 demolition of Thailand. That broke the record set when Germany beat Argentina 11-0 in the 2007 tournament.

As the USA piled up goal after goal — 10 of which came after halftime — there was much debate as to the appropriate level of celebration. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, though, it was hard not to at least crack a smile after Megan Rapinoe scored to make it 9-0 and then unleashed this beast of a celebration:

I’m not exactly sure what to call that other than “frantic leg kick”, but it sure looked fun.

It should be said that for all the work Rapinoe put in, she deserved to celebrate however she wanted. While it would have been easy to stop chasing down balls or making runs for teammates, Rapinoe never let up.

The goal was Rapinoe’s fourth in a Women’s World Cup game and she has now scored in three straight tournaments.
