UPDATE: According to an article posted in L’Équipe today, Eugénie Le Sommer will join OL teammates Sarah Bouhaddi and Dzsenifer Marozsan on a six-month loan to OL Reign. The all-time leading goal-scorer for Olympique Lyonnais will reportedly join the Tacoma-based club in early June.
Ride of the Valkyries reached out to OL Reign for comment. While the team had no response for this specific news, they indicated there will be more than one signing to announce in the next month.
Another Olympique Lyonnais player is reported to be coming to the NWSL this year. In an interview with Canal+, which was reported in Le Progres, OL Groupe president Jean-Michel Aulas said striker/attacking mid Eugénie Le Sommer will be leaving this summer for the United States. His remarks came during a wide-ranging interview about offseason changes to OL’s roster, including hints that more Americans would be coming to Lyon.
After extensive speculation about the French international’s club future as her contract was due to expire next month, Le Sommer finally signed a new two-year contract with OL in March, so any move is likely to be a loan rather than a full transfer.
While the obvious destination for Le Sommer would be OL Reign due to the ownership link between the two teams, and where she would be reunited with OL teammates Sarah Bouhaddi and Dzsenifer Marozsan, the report is careful to not confirm her destination beyond the United States.
Le Sommer has scored 220 goals in Division 1 Feminine and Champions League play during her 11 seasons with Lyon, and has added 64 more for France in 114 national team appearances.
