Obafemi Martins is about to get paid. The former Seattle Sounders forward will apparently net $6.6 million for the 2016 season with Shanghai Shenhua, according to a series of tweets from the Washington Post's Steven Goff.
(2/2) Martins was due to gross $3.6m with Sounders this year. He will net $6.6m with Shanghai. Transfer fee: ~ $2m. #mls— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) February 23, 2016
Depending on how Martins worked his taxes, he may have nearly tripled his take-home pay and surely more than doubled it. Given those numbers, it's not hard to understand why Martins would accept the move or why the Sounders weren't about to get into a bidding war.
The $2 million transfer fee may not seem like much for a player of Martins' stature, but most of it will go back to the Sounders and can be used on a future acquisition.
