The primary transfer window closes at 10:00 PM PT on Tuesday, May 7. MLS teams must have paperwork filed with the league office by that time for any talent they wish to add that requires a transfer fee or a trade within the league. After this time, teams can still add “frees” who were out of contract before the cutoff, and they can sign talent from within the US soccer pyramid and HGPs. The next opportunity to add players who require a transfer or trade will be during the secondary transfer window, which will be open July 9 through August 7.
Remember that public announcements about signings and trades can still come in the next few days, as long as the paperwork was filed in time.
Per MLS’ official roster the Seattle Sounders have four open senior roster spots, a reserve spot and two international spots open. They have room to add a player using various forms of Allocation Money, and could buy down Victor Rodriguez’s cap hit with TAM in order add another Designated Player.
Although rumors of potential signings have been few and far between for the Sounders during this window, late last a night report out of Ecuador linked them to an MLS offer for 24-year-old centerback Xavier Arreaga.
The close of the primary transfer window is generally not as active as the end of the secondary window, but there will still undoubtedly be activity throughout the league. If you are following along via Twitter, you should be particularly careful with the sources you trust. Ask yourself – does the user use their real name (and does that name match their Twitter handle), are they a verified account, do they represent an outlet that exists beyond Twitter, do they link to that site, does the rumor make any sense?
