Emanuel Cecchini goes on loan to Union de Sante Fe

This almost certainly marks the end of Cecchini’s Sounders career.

UPDATE (1/31): The Sounders announced on Friday that they’d sent Emanuel Cecchini on loan to Union de Santa Fe for the rest of 2020 when his original loan to the Sounders was due to expire.

UPDATE: The latest team to be linked to Emanuel Cecchini is an interesting one: Union de Santa Fe. If that sounds familiar, it’s where Yeimar Gomez Andrade — who appears to be on the verge of joining the Sounders — currently plays. While there’s nothing in this report to suggest the moves are related, it does add an interesting wrinkle.

Emanuel Cecchini’s time with the Seattle Sounders could end up being quite brief. After joining the Sounders in August on a loan, he made just four appearances and wasn’t even making the bench during the MLS Cup run. At the end of the season, Garth Lagerwey hinted very heavily that the team wasn’t planning to bring him back and didn’t appear to have any sort of longterm plans for him.

Now, it appears he may be heading back to Argentina.

The report suggests that Rosario Central and Banfield — Cecchini’s former team — are both interested in acquiring the 23-year-old. While the Sounders would almost certainly be perfectly happy to unload Cecchini for minimal compensation, the move is potentially complicated by Spain’s Malaga still owning his contract. It’s possible that the Sounders may end up having to use their one-time buyout in order to pave the way for Cecchini to move back to Argentina, as Malaga may not be inclined to pick up anymore of his contract than they already are.
