Sounders on Campus: Week 7

New, 7 comments

No international break for the collegiate Sounders as they roll through the conference season.

International break got you down? Don't worry, there are still Sounders out there to root for.

#3 Akron - DeAndre Yedlin
3-0-0 (2 Assists) since last update

For mid-major Akron, the hard games are mostly gotten out of the way early in the season and then the MAC conference schedule is a coast. That's been true so far this season as they've won their three conference games by a combined 11-0 score. Add their most recent match — an out of conference 2-0 win over Penn State — and they haven't surrendered a goal in 6 games. That would be a proud accomplishment for any defender, and toss in 2 assists in the last 3 matches and Yedlin seems to be in fine form. Hopefully his coach isn't too distracted figuring out how he's going to revive the Timbers.

#8 UC Santa Barbara - Brandon Brockway

The Gauchos suffered their first loss of the season against Cal State Northridge in a Big West conference that's suddenly looking rather imposing. 8th ranked UCSB is in fourth place in the conference and next week takes on Sacramento State, who's undefeated in conference play. Brockway continues to start every match in a defense that's averaged less than a goal a game against.

#18 Wake Forest - Sean Okoli
2-1-1 (Goal, Assist)

Wake also remains nationally ranked while struggling in conference play. Three of their five ACC games have ended in ties. As did their last match against Eastern Tennessee, in which Okoli scored to put him tied for second on the team with 4 goals on the season. Five more regular season games remain for Wake, including a finale against consensus #1 Maryland.

Washington - Michael Gallagher, Ian Lange, Drew White, Ryan Herman
2-0-1 (Goal)

After stumbling for a few games, the Huskies hit their stride again over the last two weeks, culminating in a 2-1 road win over top 5 team UCLA. The match was on the Pac12 Network and I have to admit it was hilarious listening to Cobi Jones call the game and not even bother pretending he wasn't openly rooting for the Bruins. Maybe more importantly, Sounder defender Michael Gallagher scored his first collegiate goal, and it would hold up as the game winner. This weekend Washington has two home matches against Cal and Aaron Kovar's Stanford.

Duke - Nick Palodichuk

It was a light stretch for Duke, who played only two games in the two weeks. The first was a nationally televised match at #2 UNC, and the Blue Devils took a lead all the way into the 87th minute before surrendering the equalizer and then the game-winner to the Tar Heels early in the overtime to miss out on what would have been a signature win. They bounced back with a win over NC State and now take on #1 Maryland in their next match.

Troy Peterson picked up a goal and an assist for College of Charleston, but it's been a rough season for the Cougars. Jesse Klug got an assist for Bucknell against Navy. Nick Raskasky continues to start in the West Virginia defense and got an assist against Iona.

Justin Solomon had a scan this week after a harsh tackle. The injury is judged to be a minor knee issue, but he will be out for some time.
