S2 roster takes shape following scrimmage with Sounders U18

Ignore the 5-2 score, revel in the talent on the field.

Dave Clark

Starfire was cold and wet when fans got to see the first ever match for Sounders 2. About 20 or so attended the game that pitted the Seattle Sounders Academy U18s against the nearly 40 trialists for S2. The match ended 5-2 with the nearly-professionals beating the someday-pros.

Most of the match was defined by a U18 side that was more organized, but slightly outmatched in technical skills. There were few notable athletic differences. As S2 players grew in familiarity their ball skills started to dominate the game. Several trialists were not used to the slick surface and ball in the Tukwila rains.

Speaking to Coach Ezra Hendrickson after the match it was quite obvious that he enjoys the prospect of selecting the players for his team, as opposed to the old Reserve League when Sigi was in charge. This is also Ezra's first week of coaching where Sigi is not by his side, and the first time in "about fifteen years" without that mentor nearby.

Below is a list of players assembled by a group of fanatics (Colin LamontShawn WheelerKyle Girvan) and the Sounder at Heart staff. The First XI Ezra identified as his likely starting lineup at this time. Though possible loans down from the 1st team would change that.

F Andy Craven
RM Sam Garza
CAM Pablo Rossi (Goal)
LM Kento Sakurai
CM Duncan McCormick
CDM Zach Barnes
LB Nathan Kouamou
CB/CDM Aaron Long
CB Nick Miele
RB/CB Isaiah Schaeffer
GK Jake Feener

These others came in and out during the final sixty minutes.

MF/F Victor Cardoso
RM/LM Jamael Cox
R/L MF Isidro Prado-Huerta (goals)
CM Troy Peterson
CDM/RB Amadou Sanyang (DNP)
CM John Arroyo
CB Chase Hanson
GK Danny Faundez
GK Zac Lubin
CM Jonathon Prieto
CDM Mamadou "Chaka" Kansaye

From those twenty-two identified trialists (S2 has zero signings, though Long and Craven both already have MLS deals) a total of six are former unsigned trialists for the 1st team, five are former Sounders Academy players, two already have MLS deals, two others (at least) are former USYNT players (Garza, Barnes) and assorted discoveries from around the world.

Sounders U18 Thomas Silvas scored a beautiful free kick that few keepers could stop. It bent over a four man wall and clanged off the upper bar about two feet from the corner. Ezra called the foul about 25 yards out one of the larger mistakes of the match.

The next scrimmage is against University of Portland on Saturday at 1 PM on Starfire's Field 3. It is open to the public and free to attend. Tuesday they will face the UW at Husky Soccer Stadium and next Saturday the opponent is Gonzaga. Interestingly enough, all three university opponents have Academy alums on their teams.
