Tonight, S2.home2.S1 comes to an end as Seattle Sounders 2 wrap up their inaugural season at Cheney Stadium. Hopefully they can send the Tacoma baseball field off on its winter break with a win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
I will admit I was skeptical of Cheney Stadium at the beginning of this season, but I got used to the slightly off angle of the seats and came to love the bizarre halftime shows put on by Casey Catherwood. Best of all, the pitch, temporary turf over the dirt and all, turned out to be better than could have been expected and one of the best fields S2 played on all year. I won’t miss the weeknight drives to Tacoma, but I will miss the rest of it for the next few months.
Luckily S2’s opponent tonight, the aforementioned Switchbacks, are an ever beatable side. S2 will be short some players due to the international break but still have a good chance to get their 6th home win of the season. The two sides drew in their first meeting this year; a grinding 0-0 result played in the unfit-for-soccer conditions of early spring high in the Rocky Mountains. This match should be prettier, though it will likely still be low scoring because the Switchbacks are one of the best defensive teams in the Western Conference and S2 and the Switchbacks are tied for fewest goals scored in the west.
There is a good chance the first team to score will take all three points. Let it be S2 so Cheney and the new Tacoma fanbase can endure the winter months with memories of a closing win.
