After a rough two weeks in south Texas, which included a bad 3-0 loss at Rio Grand Valley and a less bad 3-1 loss in San Antonio, Seattle Sounders 2 are back in the friendlier confines of Cheney Stadium for their penultimate home game of the season. S2 are one match into a 15-day stretch that will see them play 5 matches so there will likely be even more lineup variation than S2’s standard extremely high variation. The organization has traditionally used the season’s closing games to get Academy kids some more time with S2 so the average age will likely hover around or below 18 as it did in San Antonio at the weekend. This stretch run will be all about evaluating and finalizing plans for players for next season.
Their opponent tonight is a fellow “2”, well a “II” actually, LA Galaxy II, sometimes called Los Dos. They come to Cheney off of a 11-day break after trouncing the once mighty, and now struggling, Real Monarchs 6-1. Los Dos bring an inconsistent though high-flying offense that features three players with more goals than any one S2 player. Among them is 16-year-old, and likely future Mexican International, Efrain Álvarez, who has notched 12 goals in just 16 appearances and leads the league in hat tricks. The youngster scored two against S2 the last time the sides met in Carson. That match ended with S2 losing 5-3, and given Los Dos’ defensive struggles, we could be in for another high-scoring romp when the two face off tonight.
