Seattle Sounders FC 2 play their first of five matches in California this year tonight against Sacramento Republic FC. Sacramento had a good season last year and made it to the USL Western Conference Semifinals after knocking off the tournament favorite Real Monarchs in the first round. They have started this year off well, winning their first two and tying their last match against Rio Grande Valley. They are one of only five teams remaining without a loss in the Western Conference and sit 5th in the table.
Overall Republic look to have a pretty solid defense, though they are susceptible to being beaten in one on one situations so it will be key for Nick Hands to attack on the dribble. Sacramento’s biggest offensive weapon this year has been Cameron Iwasa who has 2 goals, 1 assist and 7 chances created playing mostly as a withdrawn forward. S2’s centerbacks and defensive midfielders will need to communicate well to keep track of him while he drifts in between the lines. The other player to watch is former T2 player Villyan Bijev who has scored his share of worldys against S2.
S2 should have a larger selection of players to choose from for this match with Sam Rogers and Jake Morris back from national team duty and the Academy back from the GA cup. We could see the ideal S2 DM pairing of Ray Saari and Francisco Narbon together for the first time this year, which will go a long way towards stopping Iwasa and Bijev. S2 are likely to have less possession tonight then they did last weekend, but if they can get Hinds and Felix Chenkam some assistance on the break there are likely goals to be had for S2.
