Seattle Sounders 2 are coming off of their toughest two-match road swing of the year where they faced arguably the two best teams in the Western Conference in the Real Monarchs and Phoenix Rising. They didn’t come away with any points from the trip, but they hung in against the Monarchs and looked the better team for large stretches against Phoenix in 100-degree weather. Despite the results it was a marked improvement over the doldrums of the previous six or so weeks where they never looked a team capable of even competing against the top teams.
The turnaround seems to have come in large part due to Coach Hutchinson finding a way to make the S2 press effective. He has done this by moving Jesse Daley into the defensive midfield. Daley’s willingness to join the press from deep gives S2 the numbers they have often lacked when trying to pester the opponent in their defensive end. Tonight they face Las Vegas Lights FC at Cheney Stadium where they have a real shot to end their eight-match losing streak if they can keep up the effective high press.
S2 have faced Las Vegas once before, a match which they lost 4-1 during their early summer struggles. This should be a different contest and if S2 can finish their chances they have a good shot and winning the game handily against a Vegas team that can struggle defensively.
It is going to be over 90°F at kick so hydration breaks are likely to be in effect. If you are coming to the ball park, make sure to take the proper precautions as well.
