Seattle Sounders 2 are now a couple of games into a formation change. They won the first and lost the second so we will see if Coach Hutchinson sticks with the 3-4-2-1 after it’s ineffectiveness against St. Louis. Truth be told it wasn’t the new formation that saw them beat Vegas but the energy and effectiveness with which S2 pressed. For this match up against San Antonio FC it should be pretty clear within the first 10 minutes whether S2 has a chance against them. If the four central midfielders are pressing together in San Antonio’s half from the start it should be a good game. If most of the midfielder hang back and/or don’t press until the ball is in their defensive half, San Antonio will walk away with an easy victory.
San Antonio and S2 have played 4 times in both teams short history. San Antonio have bossed the match up so S2 are 0-3-1. That said, San Antonio are not the same quick, high-flying attacking side of last year. They have actually struggled to find the net this season, and have relied instead on a stingy defense to keep themselves above the redline. We won’t be seeing the high scores this match up saw last year. It is likely someone is going to win 1-0. It will be important for S2 to not concede early and allow San Antonio to close up shop. If San Antonio score first the chances of S2 getting any points tonight go down significantly.
