S2 wants your help giving them a Tacoma rebrand

The team is soliciting advice from fans.

Ever since S2 announced their plans to move to Tacoma, it has been known that they eventually planned some sort of rebrand that reflected their new home. That time is apparently near.

S2 has officially started that process and is asking for your help. Submissions can be made here, and it looks like they want something that reflects the South Sound.

Back in 2016, we actually went through a similar process, albeit without knowing the team would relocate to Tacoma. We settled on “Kraken” and “Steelheads” as the best options. As it turns out, both of those names appear to be under consideration for a potential NHL team (kinda).

But let’s not worry about that for now. The reality is that S2 already exists and has a head start on the process. That means they get dibs, as far as I’m concerned.

What we know for sure is that there are no shortage of wonderful potential names. Here are some of the Sounder at Heart staff’s favorites:

This was easily the most popular suggestion back when we wrote about rebranding S2 in 2016. The logo @mightyfarley created is also pretty nice. It’s a legendary giant squid that supposedly hunted ships around Norway and Greenland.

What I like: Who doesn’t love monster mascots? Creating interesting clothing would be simple and almost sell itself and can play on all sorts of nautical themes. I’m not sure you could mess it up.

What I don’t like: I’m not sure it screams “Tacoma” to me.

Probably my personal favorite. It’s the small strip of water that separates Tacoma from the Kitsap Peninsula.

What I like: It works as a complement to “Sounders.” The bridge is also down the road from Cheney Stadium.

What I don’t like: Might be a bit too local? It’s also a bit on-the-nose as “Tacoma Narrows” is already a thing.

Named after Point Defiance, which is the strip of land that stretches into the Puget Sound off Tacoma’s North End.

What I like: Not only is it geographically relevant and reference the Sound, but it has a pretty cool ring to it even if you don’t get the reference.

What I don’t like: There’s already a Sounders supporters group using the name and it’s already strongly associated with the zoo.

Rainiers SC

A very on-the-nose reference to the minor league baseball team that currently shares a stadium with S2 and runs their business operations.

What I like: Aside from generally liking the name as a way of referencing the single most beautiful mountain in the country, there’s something to be said about the symmetry of it.

What I don’t like: It’s a little redundant and could certainly be confusing on many levels.

There have been two other outdoor soccer teams based in Tacoma, one was the Tacoma Tide that eventually got rebranded as Sounders U-23 and the other was an American Soccer League team called the Tides that played one season and featured someone named Bruce Arena.

What I like: I’m a sucker for alliteration and it has some compelling history.

What I don’t like: I think I’d rather err on the side of an original name.

Something fishy

There are a number of good options when it comes to something referencing salmon. I like Steelheads or Sockeyes, and it’s certainly original. My personal preference may be Tyees.

What I like: It’s local, it’s easy to come up with branding and it’s original.

What I don’t like: I’m on the fence about leaning into the “gut the fish” chant.

How should S2 rebrand?
