After USL Championship Game Day One, the Tacoma Defiance sit near the top of the Western Conference leaderboard, being just one three teams to get a win in their opener. This is the second season in a row that the home team has won the opening match at the repurposed baseball field in Tacoma. S2’s opening home winning streak only lasted one match last year, but it looks like the Defiance could extend theirs.
Their opponents today, LA Galaxy II, sit at the opposite end of the table from the Defiance. Last week Los Dos suffered the worst loss of any team in the Western Conference and thus sit bottom of the table. They are a team, as much as one exists, against which the Defiance should be able to get a result. LAGII’s best player (provided Efraín Álvarez doesn’t play) remains Frank López, who was responsible for 5 of LAGII’s 8 shots and 2 of their 3 shots on target in Week One. If the Defiance can keep him away from goal they should walk away with 3 points relatively easily. If Álvarez does play that all goes out the window, because Álvarez has the skill to beat whole USL sides almost by himself.
