Fresh off leading their team to the GA Cup Champions Division title, Danny Leyva and Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez have been named to the United States U-17 Concacaf Championship roster. The Sounders are one of five MLS teams to have at least two players named to the 20-man roster, with the LA Galaxy being the only team to have three players named.
Leyva is one of just four players named to the roster born in 2003, and he is the youngest of those players. He has yet to make his USA U-17 debut, but was one of the 26 players named to the final pre-tournament camp that was held April 4-8. He’s coming off a Golden Ball performance in the GA Cup, where the Sounders beat Valencia 1-0 in the final on Saturday.
Ocampo-Chavez comes into the Championships having led the USA in scoring during this cycle, with five goals in 13 appearances. The forward is coming off a breakout performance in the GA Cup where he scored six goals in six matches and provided the title-winning assist.
The Concacaf Championships will be held from May 1-16 in Bradenton, Fla. and double as a qualifying tournament for this summer’s U-17 World Cup. There are 20 teams involved and the USA will play in a four-team group that also features Canada (May 2), Barbados (May 4) and Guatemala (May 6). The tournament’s four semifinalists will advance to the U-17 World Cup, which will run from Sept. 17-Oct. 8 in Brazil.
