The Tacoma Defiance had been playing well of late — remaining competitive in 5 straight matches — until their 5-0 loss against Reno last match. The Defiance will look to make that match a blip in their upward trend with a win in tonight’s match against the Real Monarchs SLC in Cheney Stadium. It won’t be easy. The last time the two sides played was in Utah and was a also a 5-0 loss for the Defiance. The Defiance have historically managed fairly well against the Monarchs at home going 2-2-0 which is one of the better records the Defiance have against a team at Cheney Stadium.

There are two players the Defiance will need to slow down, Douglas Martínez and Maikel Chang. They can both score and create with the best in the USL Western Conference. Martínez is second in the league with 15 goals and has six assists, which is the 8th most in the Western Conference. Chang is a bit more of a creator — he is 10th in the conference with 48 chances created — but has also thrown in nine goals, which is as much as the Defiance’s scoring leader Justin Dhillon.
