Tacoma Defiance sign draft pick Danny Reynolds

The Seattle Sounders second-round draft pick joins the USL Championship side.

Tacoma Defiance Digital

Tacoma Defiance announced on Friday they had signed Danny Reynolds, pending league and federation approval as well as receipt of his P-1 visa. The Seattle Sounders selected Reynolds with the ninth pick of the second round of the MLS Super Draft. Reynolds brings the Tacoma roster to 15 signed players.

The English defender spent time in college as either a left back or a left-sided centerback, both at UNC-Wilmington and Louisville, but is most likely to compete for playing time with Tacoma in a crowded CB position group. Joining Taylor Mueller, Sam Rogers, Abdoulaye Cissoko, and at times Josh Atencio, Reynolds brings quality on the ball and excellent service from open play and set-pieces to the team. While he’s most likely to see the field as a CB, Reynolds’ versatility will make him an asset to coach Chris Little as the team currently lacks a back-up to presumptive starting left back Nick Hinds on the roster. If one, or both, of Atencio and Rogers were to sign with the first team — both played in the scrimmage against Sacramento Republic FC and are currently in Mexico City with the Sounders — Reynolds would have a much clearer path to playing time in Tacoma.

Prior to moving to the US for college, Reynolds spent time in the academies of multiple English professional teams, including Reading FC and Cheltenham Town where he had the opportunity to train with the first team. He was a key part of both Louisville and UNC-Wilmington teams in his time there. In his first two seasons with Louisville he appeared in 34 of their 40 games as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to UNC-Wilmington. In his senior year at UNC-Wilmington he was named Defensive Player of the Year for the Colonial Athletic Association, along with several other honors including the United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Atlantic Region. Reynolds, 22, will be one of the elder statesmen in the Tacoma dressing room, and will have an opportunity to be a leader for Defiance as they strive to continue their year-over-year improvement.
