Tacoma Defiance will host their first match of the USL Championship season on May 13. It will be a rematch of The Day Sports Stopped with San Diego Loyal coming to town. Loyal’s starting keeper is likely to be Seattle Sounders loanee Trey Muse, who started for the Defiance on that March 11 match in his last action of 2020.

Kickoff time and broadcast details are still to be confirmed. Most Defiance matches will be on ESPN+, though some could be on linear ESPN stations (ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes).

With the coronavirus pandemic still impacting the ability to host fans safely, the USL Championship’s home openers spread from April 24 (Louisville City v Atlanta II) to as late as June 19 when Oakland Roots and San Diego Loyal face off.

In addition to their home opener two other match dates are confirmed. Tacoma will open Austin Bold’s USL Championship home season on May 30. This is one of four possible out-of-division matches. They also open newly affiliated with LAFC team Las Vegas Lights’ home schedule on June 5.

Wade Webber takes over in his first season as Tacoma Defiance head coach. He has stepped in during absences of the previous coaches, drawing every match. Defiance are 2-1-0 in their Cheney Stadium openers.

It is likely that early in the season the only Sounders joining Defiance on matchday will be those on long term loans (similar to Ocampo-Chavez and Dobbeleare in 2020). Tacoma recently added four veterans of professional play to bring their roster to 17 under contract with the club.
