Tacoma Defiance by day; Seattle Sounders by night. It’s a Sunday where Puget Sound men’s soccer takes on So Cal. Defiance start things off with a brunch match against Orange County SC at 12:00 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
The Sounders second team are attempting to claim Wade Webber’s sixth straight match without a loss as their head coach. Coming off the upset of San Diego Loyal, things do not get easier. In any other division, OCSC would probably be favorites. In the Pacific, they are expected to take the second seed. If there is one thing Tacoma has going for them, it’s that Orange County is the last USL Championship team to start competitive play.
Why You Should Watch
- The offense. Defiance’s attack is good. With maybe eight players capable of starting in the front four, Webber’s choices so far have paid off. ASA has Defiance as the 5th best xG side in the early USL Championship season. Alec Diaz, Danny Robles, Ray Serrano, Marlon Vargas — and even the centerbacks — are threats so far.
- Depth at centerback. The improved defense from 2020 has included starts by four CBs in just two games. No matter the pairing, these are tough men, willing to do violence to prevent goals. They can pass a bit too. As previously mentioned, they are goal dangerous in dead ball situations.
- Alex Villanueva. He can fly up the left side, playing as an assertive left back who covers enough ground that both the mids and the winger can run an inner channel. Villanueva is a two-line player.
