UPDATE: No word as to when the match will be rescheduled, but tonight’s game will not be played tonight per USL Championship release.

Alright, alright, alright — Tacoma Defiance also take on Austin this Sunday. Defiance are at Bold Stadium inside the Circuit of the Americas to take on Austin Bold. Bold are one of four teams Tacoma take on that are outside of the Pacific Division of the USL Championship.

Starting their year 2-0-1, +3 Wade Webber’s team has been more pragmatic than year’s past, while also showing tactical flexibility to shift from his typical 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 with both fullbacks and wingbacks in their last victory. Today’s match is their longest road trip of the year, a journey down to South Texas to visit some old friends — Ugo Okoli (3 starts, 1 goal), Collin Fernandez (2 starts, 1 sub appearance), Nick Hinds (1 start, 2 sub appearances, 1 goal).

Bold and Defiance have only played twice with Tacoma going 1-0-1, +2 in their meetings back in the Before Times. Austin will be a bit tested, as they beat Real Monarchs 2-0 midweek with Hinds scoring the insurance goal. The Baymen are coming off a bye week.

Why You Should Watch

  1. Bridge the gap between Reign and Sounders. OL Reign kick at 4:07ish. The Sounders kick at 6:38 or so. Defiance kick at 6:06ish. Don’t bother with the FS1 pregame or the tail end of the Timbers match. Watch the undefeated Men of Defiance, a surging force rising from Commencement Bay.
  2. Are Defiance real? 14th in the USL Championship Power Rankings, best among MLS2s; 5th in the Pacific via 538; 3rd in the real standings — to demonstrate that this is not just a hot start a road point would go a long way. A win? That’s going to start shaking up preconceptions.
  3. Who is next, or is this all because of a group dynamic? With five different goalscorers, three different assisters, and seven players who have started at centerback it would be easy to say that the success so far is due to the group. There’s also a lot of talent on the squad, as evidenced by two signings from Tacoma to Seattle. With the Sounders’ shallow roster there is opportunity for another Defiant man to earn a contract.
